Alec Hancock
Overview
Call 2025 – Lincolns Inn (Former Cilex 2017)
Alec trained and qualified as a CILEX Lawyer at a Plymouth law firm specialising in personal injury before becoming a self-employed consultant, working for two different law firms on a self-employed basis.
In 2021, Alec obtained CILEX practice rights, including the right to conduct litigation independently and the right of audience in lower courts for civil matters. He worked as a qualified county court advocate, handling a variety of advocacy cases, including open court hearings such as fast-track trials, disposal hearings, and county court appeals. Alec also had a drafting practice, ranging from advice on quantum to preparing pleadings.
In 2023, the Bar Standards Board authorised him to establish a single-person BSB law firm focused on providing county court advocacy services.
By 2025, Alec became the first CILEX lawyer to earn higher rights of audience after passing the University of Law’s Higher Rights of Audience assessment for civil proceedings.
He then transferred to the bar, being called in July 2025 at Lincoln’s Inn.
Expertise
Relying on his extensive litigation experience over the last ten years, Alec has a strong focus on personal injury matters (RTA/EL/PL/OL) and civil costs matters, with particular interest in fixed recoverable costs and disbursement disputes.
Aminu-Edu v Esure Insurance Company [2024] Lexis Citation 356. Alec represented the Claimant before HHJ Saggerson regarding the dispute of a medical report fee in a fixed cost personal injury case. In particular, whether the medical report fee should have a breakdown of the medical agency’s fee and the expert’s fee. Whilst the Defendant’s position was ultimately preferred, Alec was successful in recovering a significant amount of the Claimant’s application costs regardless of the adverse outcome
Outside of work, Alec is an avid gym user. He enjoys playing guitar and loves to cook, using any opportunity to try new recipes.
